The government has plans to increase the allowance for insolvent disabled persons by about 55% under the Social Safety Net Program (SSNP) in the upcoming fiscal year 2019-20.

Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed said this in the Jatiya Sangsad on Tuesday, reports BSS.

"The Social Safety Net Program will be expanded. In fiscal year 2019-20, the government plans to increase the old age allowance by 10%, widow allowance by 21.43%, and the insolvent disabled allowance by 54.5% under SSNP,” he said while replying to a tabled question, placed by Shamsun Nahar, a ruling party lawmaker from a reserved seat for women.

Responding to another tabled question from treasury bench lawmaker Md Israfil Alam, Nuruzzaman further informed the House that about 4 million beneficiaries got old age allowance in outgoing FY 2018-19, while around 1.4 million women received widow allowance, and about 1 million people got disability allowance.

He also said over Tk22,100 crore was allocated under the SSNP program in the last 10 years.

The minister concluded: "A program has been set up as digital information storage, which will insert a list of the names of SSNP beneficiaries through the management information system."
