Police nabbed eight Myanmar nationals and a Bangladeshi broker on charges of illegal entry from the Shah Amanat Third Karnaphuli Bridge area in Chittagong yesterday.

The broker, Hossain Mohammad Jasim, 22, who is from Cox’s Bazar, brought the Myanmar people into the country with promises of jobs in exchange for money, said Bakalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Mohsin.

The OC added that the Myanmar people Suraiya Khatun, 40, Anwara Khatun, 40, Mohammad Ayes, 18, Md Tofa, 18, Md Ershad, 16, Md Yunus, 14, Majibur Rahman, 16, and Mohammad Hashim, 13 and the broker were charged in a case lodged with Bakalia Police Station.

He said: “Jasim brought the eight from Myanmar to Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar crossing the Naf River on Thursday night. When they arrived at the port city’s entry point in a passenger bus  yesterday at around 5am, the police stopped them on suspicion and found that they had illegally entered the country.”

The arrested foreigners however claimed before the media that they came to Bangladesh for medical treatment but the police said they did not have any legal documents.

The OC informed that Myanmar people are fleeing from their country because of the unrest and illegally entering Bangladesh; some organised gangs are taking advantage of these illegal migrants.
