Indian Foreign Secretary Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar has arrived in Dhaka on a one-day trip to Bangladesh.
He arrived at the airport on a special plane from Bhutan around 11:45am on Monday.
From Bangladesh, the foreign secretary is expected to fly to Pakistan. The journey of India's top diplomat has been widely described as the "SAARC Yatra" (SAARC journey) by the Indian media.
He was received at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by the foreign secretary of Bangladesh, M Shahidul Haque, and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Pankaj Saran.
During his stay, he is expected to meet the foreign secretary, Foreign Minister Abul Hasan Mahmood Ali, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Jaishankar's visit is expected to pave the way for Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming trip to Bangladesh. As such, he will prepare the groundwork for it, including sorting out two outstanding issues between the two neighbouring countries – the Land Boundary Agreement and Teesta Water-Sharing Agreement – for a possible “deal” during the Modi visit.
