Dhaka has sought consular access to 118 suspected Bangladeshis who were rescued by the Thai authorities this month.
“The Thai authorities have sent us a list of 118 persons who claimed that they are Bangladeshis. We sought consular access for taking their interviews,” Secretary (bilateral) of the Foreign Ministry Mustafa Kamal said at a press briefing yesterday.
If proven, the government would bring them back, he added.
During two operations in jungle this month, the Thai authorities rescued 134 people. Of them, 118 claimed that they were Bangladeshis while 16 to be Myanmar nationals.
From March until October, about 300 Bangladeshis were brought back from Thailand.
The government would also try to bring back 400 more verified Bangladeshis from Thailand by this year.
