A four-member European Parliament (EP) delegation has arrived in the capital on a two-day visit on Sunday evening.
Chairperson of the Delegation for Relations with South Asia Jean Lambert will lead the delegation in the visit, reports BSS.
A spokesman of the European Union Delegation in Dhaka said the EP delegation was coming to the country against the backdrop of the first anniversary of Rana Plaza building collapse on April 24 last year.
Besides, the EP members are scheduled to meet Foreign Minister AH Mahmud Ali, Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia on Monday.
They will meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Tuesday.
“Many issues especially Generalised System of Preferences (GSP) and labour standard in garment industry are likely to get paramount importance during the meeting with the Commerce Minister Monday noon,” the EU spokesman added.
The members of the cross-party European Parliament delegation are: Jean Lambert, John Attard- Montalto, Salvador Sedo i Alabart and Niccol Rinaldi (Alliance of Democrats and Liberals.
The members of the European Parliament will also discuss about the implementation of the measures adopted to improve factory safety and workers' rights with relevant stakeholders, notably the EU-Bangladesh Global Sustainability Compact.
Besides, they will also discuss the post-election scenario as well as social and economic issues with key Bangladeshi decision-makers and civil society representatives.
