Mozena discusses security of embassy with FM

Update : 18 Dec 2013, 07:44 PM

US Ambassador to Dhaka Dan W Mozena at a meeting with Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali yesterday expressed deep concern over security of the embassy and his staff.

The envoy sought intervention of the minister in the wake of recent demonstrations and troubles that took place around the embassy complex, located in the diplomatic enclave of the capital, said an official of the foreign ministry.

The minister assured him of appropriate measures. At the meeting, they also discussed issues related to bilateral interest, the official added.

US embassy Press and Information Officer Kelly McCarthy told the Dhaka Tribune through email: “They discussed issues related to security of diplomatic missions.”

Mozena also raised the issue of security during his unscheduled meeting with Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the meeting between the minister and the ambassador was scheduled to be held at the ministry around noon. But it was rescheduled to 2pm at state guest house Padma, apparently due to the desire of the minister to avoid media.

And, the media was not notified about the rescheduling of time and venue.

Some journalists with their own initiatives knew about it and waited outside the guest house but none of them talked to the press while no press statement was issued.

Later, the government deployed a number of police personnel in addition to the chancery police as required by the US embassy, said another official of the ministry.

“Security officials of all embassies have a regular monthly meeting with the DC Chancery [of the police] and seek additional security protection if they need,” he said. l
