Saudi Arabian authorities have expressed their disappointment with the Bangladesh High Court ruling that commuted the death sentences of three and acquitted one of the five men convicted for the murder of a Saudi embassy official in Dhaka last year.
“They [Saudi authorities] expressed their disappointment, and hoped that in the appeal, justice will prevail,” an official at the Bangladesh foreign ministry said on Tuesday.
The bench of Justice Md Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo delivered the revised verdict in the Khalaf Al Ali murder case on Monday.
The government has already announced that it will appeal the verdict.
Last December, a lower court sentenced to death Saiful Islam Mamun, Al Amin, Akbar Ali, Rafiqul Islam and Selim Chowdhury for fatally shooting Khalaf Al Ali, 45, in the capital’s Gulshan area on March 5 last year.
The High Court upheld the death sentence for Saiful Islam, while Al Amin, Akbar Ali and Rafiqul Islam were given life sentences. Selim, who is a fugitive, was acquitted.
