Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to address the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Thursday.
He will deliver the speech in Bangla at 5pm local time (3am Bangladesh time on Friday), Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin said at a briefing in New York on Wednesday.
This will be Tarique Rahman’s first address to the UN General Assembly since becoming prime minister on February 17 after the BNP won the 13th parliamentary elections with an outright majority.
Mahdi said his address will mark a new chapter as he follows in the footsteps of his father, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, and mother, late Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who also addressed the UNGA earlier.
“The prime minister will deliver his speech in Bangla, reflecting the emotions, aspirations and expectations of the people of Bangladesh,” he said.
Tarique Rahman arrived in New York on September 21 on his first visit to the United States as prime minister.
Earlier, he visited Malaysia and China on his first two state visits.
