Prime Minister Tarique Rahman will visit India at an appropriate time, although no date has yet been set, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humaiun Kobir said on Tuesday.
He said the date for the prime minister’s bilateral visit to Delhi would be decided based on mutual respect and national interests, as well as the schedules and presence of the prime ministers of the two countries.
“There is no possibility of the prime minister visiting India before attending the United Nations General Assembly,” Humaiun Kobir told reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Asked about Tarique Rahman’s planned visit to Delhi and participation in the BRICS summit, the state minister said: “No, no date has yet been set. However, the visit will certainly take place at an appropriate time.”
The state minister’s remarks came amid questions about India-Bangladesh relations, including an incident in which Indian police stopped an event organised by Awami League supporters in India.
Humaiun Kobir described the incident as a positive development and expressed hope that India would continue with such an approach.
“What you have described is a positive matter. We hope that such an approach will continue. Naturally, this paves the way for creating goodwill,” he said.
He said Bangladesh would not provide shelter in Dhaka to any crimina fleeing India and expected India to take a similar position regarding those fleeing Bangladesh.
“Just as we will not provide shelter in Dhaka to any terrorist who has fled from India, similarly, we expect that no terrorist who has fled Bangladesh will be given shelter in Delhi or any sovereign territory of India,” he said.
“This is a positive step taken by the Indian government,” Humaiun Kobir added.
