Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Wednesday expressed optimism about the future of bilateral ties, saying Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's proposed visit to India would pave the way for progress on outstanding issues, including the renewal of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty.
Speaking to reporters after separate courtesy meetings with Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Trivedi said discussions covered a range of issues and were held in a positive atmosphere.
"Once Prime Minister Tarique Rahman's visit to India is confirmed and the joint working group sits down with the necessary documents, everything will move in a positive direction," he said.
The envoy said there was no bilateral issue that could not be resolved through dialogue in a way that served the mutual interests of both countries.
"There is no problem that cannot be resolved if it benefits both countries," he said.
On the renewal of the Ganges Water Sharing Treaty, Trivedi said the joint working group of the two countries was already discussing the matter.
"I hope they will meet soon. There is no issue that cannot be resolved. Whatever is necessary in the interests of the people of both countries will be done," he said.
Describing the meetings as constructive, the Indian high commissioner said the discussions focused on issues important to the people of both countries.
"At the end of the day, this is about the people of the two countries. Whatever is necessary for the democracies of both countries, those interests will be taken into consideration," he added.
