Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad left Dhaka on Thursday morning for Iran to attend the namaz-e-janaza of Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The speaker departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30am and is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on July 4.
According to the announced funeral schedule, ceremonies and public viewing will be held at the Imam Khomeini Prayer Hall in Tehran from July 4 to 6. Funeral processions will then move to the holy city of Qom on July 7 before Khamenei's remains are transferred to Iraq on July 8 for commemorative events in the holy cities of Najaf and Karbala. He will be laid to rest on July 9 at the Imam Reza Shrine in his hometown of Mashhad, according to Iranian state media.
Iranian authorities expect up to 20 million people to attend the funeral ceremonies, making them among the largest state funeral events in the country's history. Officials from more than 30 countries and religious leaders from 90 nations are also expected to participate in the multi-day ceremonies.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was born on April 19, 1939, in Mashhad, northeastern Iran, was killed on February 28, 2026, in a wave of joint US-Israeli airstrikes targeting his compound in Tehran.
Following the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Khamenei emerged as one of the country's most influential political and religious figures. He briefly served as Iran's defence minister in 1980 before assuming responsibility for overseeing the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps after the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War. He later served as Iran's president.
Following the death of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 1989, Iran's Assembly of Experts elected Khamenei as the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
