The Russian House in Dhaka observed the “Day of Remembrance and Sorrow” through a series of commemorative programmes marking the anniversary of Nazi Germany’s invasion of the Soviet Union on June 22, 1941.
The events were held to honour the victims of the Great Patriotic War and remember those who lost their lives during the conflict.
On June 21, the Russian House hosted a memorial programme attended by students, members of the Soviet Alumni Association of Bangladesh (SAAB), representatives of the Liberation War Academy Trust, academics and guests.
The programme featured literary readings, musical performances and a theatrical presentation depicting the sacrifice and resilience of the wartime generation.
A key highlight of the event was the “Candle of Memory” campaign, where participants paid tribute to those killed in the war.
A lecture was also held based on the exhibition “22.06.1941. Tragedy. Courage. Feat.” by the Museum of Victory, focusing on the first day of the invasion and early resistance to the attack.
On June 23, the Russian House, in collaboration with the Association of Russian Compatriots in Bangladesh “Rodina,” organised another commemorative programme at Tejgaon College.
Students and faculty members took part in discussions reflecting on the human cost of war and the importance of preserving historical memory.
The session also included a screening of the Russian film Brest Fortress, which portrays the defence of the Brest Fortress during the opening days of the war.
A lecture based on the same exhibition was also delivered during the programme.
Students also created a “Wall of Memory” using paper cranes in tribute to those who lost their lives in the war.
