Update : 09 Oct 2013, 04:23 PM

The US government expressed its will to provide technical and other assistance to Bangladesh for implementation of the ‘Pure Food Act, 2013’ which was passed in the parliament recently.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Dan W Mozena, on Wednesday conveyed this will during his meeting with Food Minister Abdur Razzaque at the secretariat.

The diplomat commended the government of Bangladesh for passing the act in the parliament to ensure safe food for the people of the country, Senior Information Minister to the Food ministry SM Golam Kibria told reporters after the meeting.

Replying to the diplomat, Abdur Razzaque said: “Food adulteration and using chemicals in food items is at a severe stage in the country.”

He said: “It is urgent to stop the practice in order to save the people of the nation from the health risk caused by having adulterated and chemical mixed food.”

He added that the government was concerned over the issue.

Putting emphasis on implementing the law, the minister said, “There are lots of laws in the country which are not implemented properly. We should give emphasis on reinforcing it properly; otherwise the people will not get any results from the enacted laws.”
