Update : 06 Oct 2013, 07:38 PM

Radio Bikrampur, a community radio station, has been set up in Munshiganj sadar district with the assistance of the government of Japan.

The Embassy of Japan donated $63,204.78 for the project – under Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) to Environment Council Bangladesh – to improve the accessibility of information for the local community, according to an embassy press release.

The inaugural ceremony took place on October 5 at Circuit House Auditorium in Munshiganj.

Masayuki Taga, Counsellor of the Embassy of Japan to Bangladesh, inaugurated the radio station as the chief guest. Md Saiful Hasan Badol, District Commissioner of Munshiganj, chaired the occasion.

Taga said: “Through sharing accurate information, community radio can serve as an effective empowerment tool for the people, contributing to the betterment of their lives and socio-economic development.”

“Community radio can serve in disaster management at the times of cyclones and floods, helping to reduce damages of lives and assets,” he said.

The DC of Munshiganj district said he had listened to some of the programmes being broadcasted.

“The programme on health issues was particularly enjoyable, and helpful in bettering the lives of listeners,” he said.

Radio Bikrampur FM 99.2 will broadcast 69 hours a week, covering a variety of issues including: health and nutrition, agriculture, education, climate change and adaptation, weather, local development news, events, and public service announcements.
