Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen remarked that Chinese companies are showing a growing interest in expanding their investments in Bangladesh, amid the challenges.
He made the remarks on Wednesday while speaking at the “China-Bangladesh Industrial and Supply Chain Cooperation Seminar”, held at a hotel in Dhaka. The event was organized by the Chinese Enterprises Association in Bangladesh (CEAB) to promote bilateral trade and investment.
Yao Wen acknowledged that Chinese investors continue to face several hurdles in Bangladesh, particularly in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, and ports.
He stressed that the challenges are being carefully considered, and many Chinese firms remain eager to explore further opportunities in the country.
He expressed optimism that Chinese enterprises would play a stronger role not only in business but also in Bangladesh’s broader socio-economic development.
Highlighting the role of CEAB, the ambassador noted that the association is actively working to deepen trade and investment ties between the two countries.
He further said: “If Bangladesh’s investment climate becomes more conducive, Chinese companies will be able to expand their footprint even further.”
Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (Bida) Chairman Ashik Chowdhury said: “Any country can invest in Bangladesh, and Bida is ready to extend full cooperation.”
He added: “A Bida office will be opened in China to boost Chinese investment.”
He also suggested that a Chinatown could be established in Dhaka, noting that Bangladesh does not yet have one.
Secretary of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division Shish Haider Chowdhury pointed out that under the guidance of Dr Yunus, Bangladesh-China relations have seen renewed momentum.
He noted that Chinese companies are actively engaged in the country’s ICT sector, including in the area of cybersecurity.
He also emphasized that Bangladesh’s hi-tech parks offer further investment potential for Chinese investors.
Chairman of Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission, Jalal Ahmed, described China as a trusted friend and a key trade partner.
He said the two countries share a strong partnership, and there are ample opportunities to deepen cooperation in the energy and power sectors.
