The government of Bangladesh has decided to send two letters -- one from Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus addressed directly to US President Donald Trump -- to the United States regarding its new tariff policy, which will be dispatched within the next 48 hours.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam shared the information after a high-level special meeting on Sunday at the Ministry of Finance, chaired by the finance adviser, reports Bangla Tribune.
As per the meeting's decision, the letters will request that Bangladeshi exports continue to benefit from the existing 15% tariff rate for at least another three months.
According to Shafiqul, one of the letters will be sent by Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, addressed directly to US President Donald Trump. The second letter will be sent by Commerce Adviser Sk Bashir Uddin to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR).
The press secretary said: "The letters will outline the steps already taken by Bangladesh to facilitate exports to the United States, as well as strategies for future measures aimed at easing trade and investment opportunities in the country."
“Whatever the content of the letter may be, it will reflect our business-friendly stance,” he said.
“We will safeguard Bangladesh’s commercial interests. Compared to our competitor countries, we aim to be even more favourable to business so that both the United States and Bangladesh benefit, creating a win-win situation and expanding our market access.”
Among those present at the meeting were Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud, Energy Adviser Fouzul Kabir Khan, Chief Adviser’s High Representative Dr Khalilur Rahman, Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi, Executive Chairman of the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Chowdhury Ashik Mahmud Bin Harun, former BGMEA presidents Rubana Huq and Faruque Hassan, leading businessman Tapan Chowdhury, Apex Footwear Managing Director Syed Nasim Manzur, and BKMEA Executive President Md Hatem, along with senior officials from various ministries.
