Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping held bilateral talks on Friday at the People's Great Hall in Beijing and discussed bilateral, regional and global issues.
Xi and Yunus also discussed ways to further strengthen relations between the two countries and take them to new heights, protecting Dhaka and Beijing’s mutual and strategic interests, reports UNB.
They discussed various strategic bilateral issues between Bangladesh and China, trade and investment growth, agriculture, infrastructure, support for renewable energy sectors, the Rohingya crisis, and overall issues of mutual interest, eyeing a new chapter in relations.
At the meeting, Yunus sought China's greater role in establishing peace, prosperity and stability for both nations.
Dr Yunus noted that China is a reliable partner and friend of Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi side firmly adheres to the one-China principle and opposes "Taiwan independence," he said.
Recalling his long relationship with China, the chief adviser said he had an attachment with China in introducing Grameen Bank and social business there.
During the meeting, he focused on the Rohingya crisis, seeking China's strong role in the safe and dignified return of Rohingyas to their home of origin in Myanmar.
Noting that the peoples of the two countries have a long-standing history of friendly exchanges, Xi said the two sides have always supported each other and treated each other as equals for win-win cooperation since the establishment of diplomatic ties.
China maintains a high degree of stability and continuity in its good neighbour and friendly policy toward Bangladesh, and continues to be a trustworthy neighbor, friend and partner of Bangladesh, Xi added.
Stressing that Bangladesh and China should continue to deepen political mutual trust and firmly support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns, Xi said China supports Bangladesh in safeguarding national sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and exploring a development path suited to its national conditions.
He called on the two sides to advance high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, expand cooperation in the digital economy, green economy, marine economy, infrastructure, water conservancy and other fields, enhance people-to-people exchanges and strengthen mutual understanding and friendship between the two peoples.
