Bangladesh has written to the Indian Ministry of External Affairs asking for ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's return to the country.
Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain shared the information on Monday, hours after the home affairs adviser's comment that his ministry had sought the foreign ministry’s support in this regard.
"We have informed India. We have conveyed our request for Sheikh Hasina's return for judicial purposes," Touhid said. "This has been communicated through a note verbale (diplomatic note)."
Meanwhile, at an event in Dhaka, Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said a letter had been sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the return of Hasina, who has been in India since her ouster on August 5.
"A letter has already been sent to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It is in process for extradition," the adviser said.
Meanwhile, a source at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that in the second week of December, a meeting took place in the office of Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, where Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and Home Affairs Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury were present.
After that meeting, a letter was given to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to facilitate Sheikh Hasina's return from India.
