Khulna wears festive look ahead of Swedish crown princess’ visit

  • Reductions in poverty, women’s rights, important advancements
  • She will stay in Bangladesh from March 18 to 21

Koyra, the coastal upazila of Khulna, is adorned in a festive look ahead of the visit of Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden as a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) from March 18 to 21.

The upazila administration has made extensive preparations to welcome her. Security has been beefed up across Koyra. Besides, the roads are being cleaned. The work of organizing the places of visit of the Princess of Sweden is also going on in full swing.

"The crown princess's visit is a unique opportunity to raise awareness of Bangladesh’s development journey and strengthen partnerships towards a resilient and inclusive future," said Ulrika Modéer, UN assistant secretary-general and director of external relations and advocacy at UNDP, who will accompany the crown princess during the visit.

"We’ve seen reductions in extreme poverty, strengthening of women’s rights and important advancements in areas such as climate adaptation, disaster risk management and inclusive digitalization. At the same time, Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to both natural disasters and climate change and several development challenges remain."

The crown princess will also be accompanied by Sweden's Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade Johan Forssell.

Khandaker Yasir Arefin, deputy commissioner of Khulna, said that Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria will stay in Bangladesh from March 18 to 21 as a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). On March 19, she will visit some places in Koyra upazila of Khulna, a coastal region adjacent to the Sundarbans.

Koyra police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Mizanur Rahman said that all preparations have already been completed for the state guest's arrival in Koyra. Besides the police, RAB, BGB, Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, are all making security arrangements.

Koyra Upazila Nirbahi Officer BM Tariq-uz-Zaman said, under the guidance of higher authorities, all preparations have been completed to welcome the state guest.
