WB seeks to expand engagement with Bangladesh, offers new $700m package

  • Rest as soft loans for host community

The World Bank has said it seeks to expand its engagement with the new  Bangladesh government, offering a new package for managing the Rohingya crisis.

Country Director Abdoulaye Seck conveyed the lender’s interest to Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud during a meeting on Tuesday at the latter's office.

The foreign minister said Seck had showed interest in strengthening and widening the engagement of the World Bank with the new government.

The World Bank official had specifically mentioned a new package worth $700 million, of which $315 million would given as grants for Rohingyas and the rest as soft loans for the host community in Cox's Bazar, the foreign minister said while briefing reporters.
