Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma on Monday said that Delhi and Dhaka would be able "to achieve even greater momentum in our bilateral partnership" in the new term of the Awami League government.

He made the comment after his first meeting with new Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On behalf of the Indian External Affairs Minister, he congratulated the new Bangladesh foreign minister and looked forward to working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in taking the relationship forward.

"Also we discussed how over the last decade, over the last ten years or more, the relationship has acquired unprecedented momentum and growth under the leadership of our two prime ministers and how this has become irreversible and people-centric," Pranay Verma said.

"We also discussed that there are some recent developments that have happened in our relationship, how our development partnership is benefiting the people of our two countries, and how our cooperation is making a positive impact on our economic growth in both our countries.

"So some of the things that we discussed were many positive developments in 2023 when we saw some very large projects completed including energy pipeline, two railway projects, one power plant launch of our the mechanism for trade in Indian rupees linking of our digital payment systems.

"And also in the start-up in new areas like start-up where we launched in India, Bangladesh start-up bridge last year. So it was a very wide-ranging stocktaking of our relationship, a very positive agenda that we have today and also exploring some of the things that we would like to work for the future, including areas like climate change, digital economy, how we can help support Bangladesh's, the Prime Minister's vision of Smart Bangladesh by 2041 and many other areas of mutual interest," he said.

With that background, he said they were "very hopeful and confident that in the next term, the new term of this government, we will be able to achieve even greater momentum in our bilateral partnership and we will be able to make our development partnership."
