  • Spokesperson says it is essential for consolidation of democracy
  • UN secretary-general concerned about reports of violence

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on all parties in Bangladesh to reject all forms of violence and ensure that everyone's human rights and access to the rule of law are fully respected.

“... and that is essential for the consolidation of democracy and economic prosperity in Bangladesh. And he’s, of course, concerned about reports of the violence that we’ve seen,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN chief, said in response to a question at a regular press briefing on Tuesday.

Dujarric’s statement came after a journalist asked him what measures the UN secretary-general was taking to stand beside the “victims, oppressed and disenfranchised people of Bangladesh facing ruthless crackdown by the regime in the name of so-called election.”
