France announces new fund for Rohingya children

  • Help children in school
  • Repercussions of ration cut
Update : 21 Nov 2023, 05:56 PM

France has announced its latest contribution of €1 million to support the World Food Program in leading school feeding projects in the Rohingya refugee camps.

This financial support comes right after the announcement of France President Emmanuel Macron’s increasing support to the Rohingya response in Bangladesh, the embassy said in a Facebook post.

"France will keep advocating for a better integration of refugees worldwide."

The World Food Program said this new contribution will help us keep Rohingya children in school and learning.

“The contribution came at a critical time when life has become extremely difficult for the Rohingya population. The repercussions of the ration cut are particularly harsh for the most vulnerable, including children. Mounting economic pressure on families has led to children being increasingly pulled out of school, forced into odd jobs, and girls being offered in early marriages. We urgently need support to restore full assistance,” the UN agency said.

WFP supports 246,000 Rohingya children in the camps in Cox’s Bazar and on Bhasan Char Island with nutritious, fortified biscuits as morning snacks through the school feeding programme.

Earlier this year, France contributed €1.25 million towards the nutrition program for Rohingya children and pregnant and breastfeeding women in the camps and livelihood programs for the Bangladeshi host community in Cox's Bazar.
