This year marks the 78th anniversary of Hiroshima Day. On August 6, 1945, during World War II, a US B-29 Superfortress Enola Gay dropped an atomic bomb code-named “Little Boy” on Hiroshima, Japan, resulting in an estimated 140,000 deaths.
On this occasion, Japanese ambassador in Dhaka Iwama Kiminori conveyed his message for peace with the people of Bangladesh.
The message is as follows:
“Since I assumed my duty as Ambassador of Japan in Bangladesh last December, I have been humbled by the prayers and sincere condolences received from Bangladeshi people for the victims of the tragedy. With the average age of survivors is now 85, and number of survivors are decreasing with time. I thereby, express my sincere gratitude for the determination of people in Bangladesh for the tragedy of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
“Last May, Japan hosted G7 Summit in Hiroshima. In the occasion, the Prime Minister Kishida Fumio, who has his roots there, stated “The G7 firmly rejects any unilateral attempt to change the status quo by force or the threat or use of nuclear weapons and upholds the international order based on the rule of law”.
“Every year in Bangladesh, various functions and discussions are held on Hiroshima Day. Activities by Swapnadal, Japan Bangla Peace Foundation and Liberation War Museum have shown the desire for peace for our future generation and this should resonate with all of us more than ever before.
“As the number of the survivors are getting fewer each year, it is all the more important for all of us to remember the tragedies and pass the lessons we have learned on to the future generations.
“I truly appreciate Bangladeshi people who have showed sympathy to the victims and expressed strong message for peaceful world. I hope that we, Japan and Bangladesh, stand hand in hand to make this world more peaceful and harmonious place for all,” read the message.
