European Union (EU) Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore has said that the EU will put pressure on Myanmar to create an environment for the repatriation of Rohingyas.
At the same time, the Asean countries will continue their diplomatic efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis, he said.
EU Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore said this while talking to reporters at the Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) after visiting the Rohingya camps in Cox's Bazar's Ukhiya on Thursday.
Eamon Gilmore said Bangladesh has been carrying the burden of housing a large number of Rohingyas for the last six years and the people of Bangladesh have been providing humanitarian assistance.
“Bangladesh deserves to be thanked for this. For the last six years, the European Union has been providing assistance to the Rohingyas through Bangladesh,” he added.
Gilmore also said Rohingyas have told him about their sufferings in the camps, and the EU is ready to stand by them.
A five-member delegation, including Eamon Gilmore, has visited the Rohingya camps.
Earlier, Rohingya refugees in a discussion with a delegation from the EU on Thursday said they are ready to return to their home country at any moment.
They said they need global support for repatriation along with rights. In view of this, European EU Special Representative for Human Rights Eamon Gilmore assured them that the European Union is always on the side of the humanitarian needs of the Rohingyas, including their repatriation, they added.
