Prolonged firing has reportedly taken place targeting the Border Guard Bangladesh outpost at Palangkhali border in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar, which has triggered panic among local residents.
BGB officials did not give details about the incident, but the chairman of Palangkhali union parishad said he had heard about the firing, and that the incident took place at around 6pm on Tuesday.
However, Chairman Gafur Uddin added that he did not know who or what organization had opened fire.
“In the evening, sudden firing started from the Myanmar side, targeting the BGB outpost at Dhamankhali border in Palangkhali union. It went on for at least 30-40 minutes. Later, BGB personnel fired back, after which they (those who started the shooting) went away by crossing the border,” the UP chairman said, quoting locals.
The administration as well as the BGB had been informed about the incident, he added.
Residents of the area suspect the attackers are members of a terror group based in Myanmar.
BGB 34 Batallion chief Lt Col Saiful Islam said he was on his way to the spot, adding that he would give details later.
The BGB was strictly monitoring border areas, he added.
