India has agreed to provide 20 broad gauge diesel locomotives to Bangladesh through donations.
A press release sent by the Indian High Commission in Dhaka on Thursday confirmed the information.
The decision was taken with the joint consent of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi during her visit to India.
The new initiatives taken for the development of the Bangladesh-India rail link will include the Kaunia-Lalmonirhat-Mughal Ghat-New Gitaldaha rail link between the two countries, the establishment of the rail link between Hili and Birampur, Benapole-Jessore railway and signalling system and upgradation of the railway station, restoration of the rail link between Burimari and Changrabandha, construction of a container depot in Sirajganj.
The decision to evaluate the ongoing bilateral initiatives for the development of internal rail connectivity in Bangladesh, convert the Tongi-Akhaura line into the dual gauge, supply railway rolling stock to Bangladesh Railway and increase the capacity of Bangladesh Railway employees through reputed training institutes of Indian Railways, and provide IT-related cooperation to ensure the improvement of the services of Bangladesh Railway.
These pioneering projects will be funded through a series of financial action plans under the bilateral development cooperation between Bangladesh and India.
