Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Li Jiming has said that Beijing is determined to build the ninth friendship bridge.

“Experts from the two countries are already preparing for feasibility study on the project,” the envoy said on Sunday, when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Eighth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge over the Kocha River in Pirojpur Sadar upazila.

The Roads and Highways Department constructed the 998-metre-long and 13.4-metre-wide bridge at a cost of Tk894.08 crore. The Chinese government provided Tk654.8 crore as project assistance for the bridge.

The bridge is named after Bangamata Begum Fazilatun Nesa Mujib.

The construction work started on November 1, 2018. It will be opened to traffic at 12:01am on Monday.

Jiming said some 150 Chinese engineers and over 600 local engineers and workers were involved in the bridge’s construction. “The bridge, like all its predecessors, connects not only the two banks of a river, but also the hearts of Bangladesh and Chinese peoples.”

He said the Bangladesh side “graces it by naming it after Bangamata, making it another monument of our two countries named after the great figures of Bangladesh, following the Bangabandhu Bangladesh-China Friendship Centre put into use last year.

“It manifests how the two peoples cherish our friendship.”

Recalling the visits of Chinese President Xi Jinping and State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the ambassador said the two countries reassured the commitment to amicable relations and joint development.

“The Chinese dream of the great national rejuvenation and the ‘Sonar Bangla’ dream are well connected.

“Looking ahead, we welcome Bangladesh to deepen cooperation with China under the Belt and Road Initiative, and to explore new opportunities under the Global Development Initiative,” the envoy said.
