At least 27 Bangladeshi citizens have still remained stranded in Afghanistan as the Taliban strengthened grip on the landlocked country.
Among them are six Brac employees, seven of an Afghan telecommunications company, six Tabligh participants, three prisoners, two from a German company, two from the Afghan sewerage corporation and another from the private sector.
The process of bringing them back to Bangladesh was underway, Bangladesh Ambassador to Uzbekistan Md Jahangir Alam told Bangla Tribune over the phone on Thursday night.
He said 18 of them were in Kabul, the six Tabligh men in Jalalabad near the Pakistan border and the private job holder was in Mazar-i-Sharif.
“One of the prisoners is in Kabul, but the other two are still unaccounted for,” the envoy added.
The six Tabligh men had yet to contact the embassy of Bangladesh in Uzbekistan, but Ambassador Jahangir hoped that they were alright.
Bangladesh has no embassy in Afghanistan and the country’s interests are maintained through the embassy in Uzbekistan.
