Fifteen days ago, 36 Bangladeshis were being taken across the desert from Benghazi, Libya, to Tripoli. On the way they were taken hostage.
Of them, 26 were brutally shot dead on Thursday, and the rest were injured.
The 36 Bangladeshis were taken hostage for ransom in the town of Mizdah according to what the Bangladesh Mission in Tripoli said in a report, quoting one of the survivors.
“At one stage of their ordeal, the hostages killed the Libyan leader of the people who had taken them hostage. The kidnappers then opened fire which led to the deaths,” the survivor said.
The bodies of the deceased are being kept at Mizdah Hospital. The injured were shot in the arms, legs, chest and back, and are undergoing treatment at the hospital, according to the report.
According to the hospital director who spoke to Bangladesh Embassy officials over the phone, the bodies are currently in Mizdah Hospital morgue for further processing, says the report.
The 11 Bangladeshis injured in the incident were sent to Tripoli Medical Center (TMC) for advanced treatment with first aid at Jintan Hospital, the Bangladesh Mission report further mentioned.
Bangladesh Embassy officials will meet the injured and take steps to find out the details of the incident and the identities of the dead.
The report also said the embassy would extend maximum cooperation to the injured.
