Speaker urges IMF to help strengthen parliamentary committees

Speaker of the House Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Thursday urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to help strengthen parliamentary committees of the country, by arranging training programs for the officials concerned.

The speaker made the call when IMF Resident Representative in Dhaka Ragnar Gudmundsson met with her at her office in parliament, an official press release said.

During the meeting, they also discussed the upcoming Microeconomic Policy and Capacity Building Seminar for Legislators in South Asia, to be held in New Delhi from March 26-27.

Praising the IMF’s activities and its assistance for the country’s economic development, Dr Sharmin said the IMF has the scope to help strengthen the capacity of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Undertakings and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.

Highlighting different aspects of the upcoming seminar to be held in New Delhi, Gudmundsson informed the speaker of the overall activities of the global lending agency.

Senior officials of parliament were present at the meeting.
