PM Sheikh Hasina set for Germany visit

Her official visit will continue in the United Arab Emirates

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to leave for Germany, on Thursday, on the maiden overseas visit of her third consecutive term in office. 

The tour will also feature a stop in the United Arab Emirates.

The premier’s office’s spokesman said during the six-day, two-nation, visit, Sheikh Hasina will attend an international security conference in Germany’s Munich, and a defence exhibition in the UAE’s Abu Dhabi; where she will also hold bilateral talks.

According to the schedule, she will leave Dhaka on a VVIP flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on Thursday morning; along with members of her entourage. 

The two-day Munich Security Conference begins on February 14.

Hours after reaching Munich, Sheikh Hasina will attend a community reception to be organized by the Bangladesh Mission in Germany; at Hotel Sheraton, where she will be staying during the visit.

The premier will attend the opening ceremony of the security conference the following day and deliver a statement, plus take part in a discussion on defence cooperation.

She is also scheduled to participate in a roundtable titled “Health in Crisis-WHO cares” to be hosted by the Centre for Strategies and International Studies and the World Health Organization (WHO).

The prime minister will also hold a meeting with Nobel laureate Beatrice Fihn, the executive director at the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons; and Dr Fatou Bensouda, a top prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The premier will then hold meetings with Joe Kaeser, president and CEO of Siemens AG, and Hans Wolfgang Kunz, CEO of Veridos.

Then, Sheikh Hasina will attend a dinner jointly hosted by Borge Brende, president of the World Economic Forum, and Jared Cohen, CEO of Jigsaw.

On February 16 the prime minister will join a panel discussion on “Climate Change as a Security Threat.”

From Munich, Sheikh Hasina will arrive in Abu Dhabi, in the morning of February 17, and attend the opening session of the International Defence Exhibition (Idex-2019) at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Center (Adnec).

During the visit, the premier is likely to meet with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi, and attend bilateral talks with Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president and prime minister of the UAE and ruler of the Emirate of Dubai, plus other leaders.

Sheikh Hasina will have an audience with Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Al Ketbi, wife of the Late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the UAE and ruler of Abu Dhabi, at Al Bahar Palace.

The prime minister will attend a community event to be held at the St Regis Abu Dhabi Hotel where she will be staying during the visit.

Sheikh Hasina is set to fly home in the morning of February 20.
