United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said the UN is in full solidarity and cooperation with the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Foreign Secretary Md Shahidul Haque, while briefing the press on Thursday, said: “The UN secretary general expressed his firm supportive stance to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” during a bilateral meeting at UN Headquarters.

"...The United Nations has full solidarity and provides full cooperation with the government of Sheikh Hasina," the Foreign Secretary quoted Antonio Guterres as saying, reported UNB.

The UN secretary general, however, expressed his hope that the next general election will be fair and participatory.

Praising the progress of Bangladesh, he said the development of the country is truly remarkable and many countries can learn from this.

Guterres praised the leadership of the Sheikh Hasina highly—particularly for her humanitarian stance over the Rohingya crisis. ‘You [Sheikh Hasina] can be a role model for many other heads of State,’ he said.

About the Rohingya crisis, he stressed the need for a quick start of the repatriation process of the forcibly displaced Rohingya people.

Guterres, while speaking about climate change, said that all countries will have to, together, address the climate change issue. He expects the Bangladeshi prime minister will continue her leading role in this regard.

The prime minister also informed the UN secretary general about different development aspects of Bangladesh.

Later, President of International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Peter Maurer met the prime minister at the meeting.

Later, Sheikh Hasina asked the ICRC, which operates in Myanmar’s northern Rakhine State, to play a strong role in creating an environment conducive for the Rohingyas to repatriate to their homeland. She asked that it provide Rohingyas with good livelihoods and houses so that they may enjoy their rights after their repatriation.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also had a meeting with the President of the 73rd session of the UN General Assembly Maria Fernanda Espinosa at the president's office of the UN Headquarters.
