In an innovative stroke to further bolster the diplomatic relationship with Bangladesh, Canadian High Commissioner in Dhaka Benoît-Pierre Laramée appeared on Facebook to chat with Bangladeshi nationals on February 14, Tuesday.
Canada officially recognised the People’s Republic of Bangladesh on February 14, 1972, resulting in the 45-year long relationship.
Relations between Canada and Bangladesh have mirrored significant changes in human development, flourishing industries and rapid economic growth.
In the 15-minute chat, the high commissioner said, Canada and Bangladesh have been partners for around 45 years and united by a common commitment to development, a growing trade relationship and strong people-people ties.“The relationship began with a focus on Canadian development assistance to Bangladesh. That development assistance has reached more than four billion Canadian dollars and the relationship has evolved to encompass two-way trade worth over two billion Canadian dollars annually. Extensive personal connections between our people and security cooperation should also be mentioned.”
“In the years ahead, Canada looks forward to building on this relationship to the mutual benefit of both nations,” he added.
In response to people's query the Canadian envoy said, “To bring people together and inspire them to create a human connection, the High Commission in the past have partnered with different organisations for organising art exhibitions, promoting young emerging artists, photo exhibitions, participating in the children’s film festival and outreach activities.
“At the moment we are not contemplating in opening a cultural centre, however, we will share your suggestion during this year of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation with the team,” Laramée added.
