Bangladesh has won three major elections at the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the UN in New York this week.
The elections were held on April 16, 2018 granting Bangladesh the privilege to represent the Asia-Pacific Group on the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) from 2019-2023, Executive Board of UNICEF from 2019-2021, and Executive Board of UN WOMEN from 2019-2021.
The CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to alleviating gender equality and the empowerment of women while the UN Women promotes women's empowerment and development, leadership, participation, and engagement in peace and security issues.
Bangladesh’s presence in these key bodies will stress on national priorities, address emerging issues, and new approaches impacting us and other developing countries at UN. Bangladesh's presence is also expected to help garner international cooperation and partnership in attaining the Sustainable Development Goals.
Apart from Bangladesh, Malaysia has been elected as a member of CSW, India, Mongolia, Nepal, and Saudi Arabia to the UN WOMEN and Mongolia and Pakistan to the Executive Board of UNICEF.
Notable international elections where Bangladesh was elected previously include, election as member to the Executive Board of UNESCO (2017-2021), Committee for Program and Coordination (CPC) (2017-2019), Deputy Member of International Labour Organization (ILO) Governing Body (2017-2020), and Member of Executive Board of UN World Food Program (WFP) (2016-2018).
