Pakistan on Thursday condemned 'anti-Pakistan' statements issued by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina earlier this week.

During the Genocide Day address on March 25, the Bangladesh premier had said the people of Bangladesh "must respond to those who have been lost in their love for Pakistan."

"They must be punished. We must make them forget their love for Pakistan," Hasina said.

The prime minister continued: “The war criminals carried out the genocide. But those who patronised them, made them ministers, MPs and created scope for them to do politics are equally guilty.”

Hasina said the trial of those who had directly been involved in genocide will continue. “There is no mercy for them. They must be tried. And hatred will also be vented on the patrons.”

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Dr Muhammad Faisal during a weekly briefing on Thursday in Islamabad described Sheikh Hasina’s remarks as being “against the spirit of the 1974 tripartite agreement.”

During the briefing, Dr Faisal said under the 1974 Shimla tripartite agreement, Dhaka had agreed not to proceed against those whom it had accused of war crimes during the 1971 Liberation War, which the Pakistani bureaucrat dubbed as “1971 separation.”
