Common Nordic chancery to be inaugurated in Jan

Update : 01 Jan 2016, 03:05 PM

The Common Nordic Embassy at Bay's Edgewater Building in the capital's Gulshan area will be formally inaugurated this month.

The Common Nordic Embassy was established by the embassies of Denmark, Norway and Sweden in July, but it will be formally inaugurated in January, Danish Ambassador to Dhaka Hanne Fugl Eskjær told the Dhaka Tribune.

The countries have joint chancery in other places in the world, including a robust joint chancery in Berlin, Germany.

This is the second joint chancery in Bangladesh; the first one was set up by France and Germany last year.

"For the three countries, it is natural to work very closely together since we have much in common in relation to, among other things, language, values, culture and priorities in Bangladesh. Together we are stronger and together we can do more for Bangladesh,” the Danish ambassador said.

She said green and sustainable growth of Bangladesh is an important focus area for the Nordic countries.

“Since the three Nordic countries are front runners in the area of green technologies, innovation and a sustainable approach to business, we can promote and share these solutions with Bangladesh,” she said

Eskjær said they have a strong Nordic presence in Bangladesh and were among the first countries to recognise Bangladesh.

Denmark has been represented in Bangladesh since the early 1970s and Dhaka opened up its first mission in Copenhagen in 2015.

More than 60 Danish companies are active in Bangladesh and the embassy assists many of them in finding the right business partners in Bangladesh, the ambassador said.

Denmark through its development office DANIDA helps Bangladesh to combat poverty and promote human rights.

Sustainable economic growth is central to DANIDA strategy and it focuses on green growth and promotes social progress in order for it to contribute to improving the lives of poor people and their ability to create a better life for themselves, the Danish ambassador said.

Denmark-Bangladesh Country Policy 2013-2017 governs the overall objectives of Copenhagen's engagement in Dhaka.

Norway opened its mission in Dhaka in 1972.

Through its development arm, NORAD, Norway disbursed more than 12 billion Norwegian Krone in aid (adjusted for inflation) to Bangladesh since 1974, and it is the fourth largest recipient country of Norwegian bilateral aid over time.

The bilateral cooperation was revised in 2008, and the emphasis is now on business cooperation and political dialogue.

Sweden also helps Bangladesh through its development arm SIDA.
