US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat has said that Bangladesh has made considerable progress in ensuring workers' safety but much more needs to be done.
“Over the last two to three years, Bangladesh has progressed in the ready-made garment sector,” she said at a programme at East West Industrial Park Limited in Gazipur's Board Bazar area on Friday.
“We have come here today to see how the workers and their children are living their lives. The international community, including the US, has closely observed the labour situation in Bangladesh and they found that workers are enjoying the rights.”
The envoy said there should be unity among owners and workers if change is expected, adding that change is never easy.
She also thanked East West Industrial Park Limited authorities for their corporate social responsibility initiatives.
The organisation's Deputy Managing Director Romana Rashid and BGMEA (Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association) Vice-president Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu addressed the programme among others.
