US envoy for combined efforts to address extremism

US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat has underscored the importance of united efforts against violent extremism in Bangladesh.

While addressing a meeting of Diplomatic Correspondents’ Association Bangladesh (DCAB) at the Jatiya Press Club Monday, she said: “Let me underscore the vital importance of our joint efforts to address violent extremism in Bangladesh.

“We have everything we need to fight the emergence of ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] in the country.”

Praising the role of Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in eliminating religion-based terrorist outfits in Bangladesh, the US envoy said: “Bangladesh has a prime minister who has taken a zero tolerance against terrorism.”

Calling Bangladesh the full-fledged partner of the US, she added: “We are collaborating on security, development, or economic issues.”

Referring to the long-standing bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and the United States, Bernicat said the countries have developed the resources, the commitment, and the shared experiences they need to counter terrorism and violent extremism.

She also expressed her firm determination to work together with shared partners for the safety and security of countries concerned. “This is a global issue that requires a coordinated, global approach.”
