A Bangladeshi hospital marked World Mother's Day on Sunday by recognizing outstanding mothers from across society at a special awards ceremony in Dhaka.
Universal Medical College Hospital organized the "Gorobini Ma 2026" award ceremony at Hall 2 of the RAOWA Convention Center in Mohakhali DOHS, honoring mothers of prominent figures in government, law, medicine, education, and the arts.
The following recipients were recognized across 11 categories:
Administration: Begum Farhat Islam, mother of Md Fahimul Islam, secretary of the Ministry of Railways.
Law enforcement: Razifa Azad, mother of Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Commissioner and DIG Md Shafiqul Islam.
Law and justice: Begum Rokeya Rashid, mother of Mohammad Rakibul Islam, senior district and sessions judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal in Barisal.
Education: Selima Haque, mother of Dr Tania Haque, professor in the Department of Women and Gender Studies at the University of Dhaka.
Journalism: Razia Ahmed, mother of AKM Manjurul Islam, executive editor of Bangladesh Pratidin.
Medical science: Saraswati Prasad, mother of Professor Dr Indrajit Prasad, head of the Endocrinology Department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Engineering and design: Falguni Kundu, mother of architect, educator, and design professional Amiti Kundu.
Acting (Male): Fatema Akter Kajol, mother of actor, model, and director Ziaul Hoque Polash.
Acting (Female): Syeda Sharmin, mother of actor, singer, and model Tasnia Farin.
Music: Sayma Monir Minu, mother of National Film Award-winning singer Somnur Monir Konal.
In a special "Indomitable Talent" category, Shirin Akter Pia, mother of Prothom Alo Trust scholar Khairum Islam, was also honored at the ceremony.
