A day-long workshop on “Digital and Physical Security for Journalists”, urging journalists to practise increased safety and security to protect themselves from digital threats, was held on Thursday at Avenue Hotel in Chittagong.

Speakers at the workshop, organized by Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) and supported by Internews, emphasized on online risks and unprecedented spying of journalists from hackers and criminal groups. As news outlets cover conflicts and unrest, steps should be taken to increase safety in accessing resources, they said.

The workshop was conducted to create awareness and train journalists to increase protection online.

Bangladesh NGOs Network for Radio and Communication (BNNRC) CEO AHM Bazlur Rahman said: “The workshop is an opportunity for participants to learn about digital safety and security and how to protect themselves from digital threats. We strongly believe, this context and knowledge-based training program would greatly contribute to preventing digital hazards in the digital era.”

The participants were exposed to various sessions to enable them to safely use digital media, such as ways of safely using emails and the internet, function of cookies, top risks and solutions to consider in the virtual world, distinguishing safe websites, and creating strong passwords to avoid sniffing.

In the interactive training sessions, the participants asked their questions and the instructors provided additional information.

Ruhul Amin Rushid, senior news editor of Banglavision, and Kamrul Hasan, senior reporter of Dhaka Tribune, jointly conducted the training.
