The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday issued a gazette formally declaring BNP candidate and former secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as Bangladesh’s 23rd president.

The information was disclosed in a gazette notification signed by EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed on Thursday. The Election Commission issued the gazette in the evening after the votes were counted in Parliament.

The gazette said Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, son of Mirza Ruhul Amin and a resident of Thakurgaon Sadar, was declared elected president of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh in accordance with Rule 12(6) of the Presidential Election Rules, 1991, following the declaration by the Returning Officer and Election Commissioner under Section 11 of the Presidential Election Act, 1991.

Earlier in the day, Mirza Fakhrul won the presidential election with 255 votes, defeating Oli Ahmed, chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and candidate of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, who secured 88 votes.

Mirza Fakhrul will serve a five-year term as president.
