Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud has said that there is no scope for the Awami League to take part in the election unless its registration suspension is lifted or withdrawn.
He made the statement while speaking to reporters at a daylong workshop titled “Voter List Update 2025: Follow-up Review and Sustainable Development Planning”, held at the Rajshahi Regional Public Administration Centre on Monday.
When asked whether an acceptable election is possible without the Awami League, the commissioner said: “It is not yet time to answer that question. The Election Commission is fully prepared to implement the election within the timeframe set by the chief adviser.”
The interim government, earlier this month, banned all activities of the Awami League until the trial of the ousted party and its leaders is completed at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Soon after, the Election Commission suspended the registration of the Awami League as a political party, citing a Ministry of Home Affairs gazette issued under the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance and Section 18(1) of the Anti-Terrorism Act.
