The newly formed Electoral Reform Commission (ERC) and the Election Commission (EC) have jointly pledged to implement comprehensive reforms and ensure free, fair, and credible elections.

Drawing inspiration from the ideals of the July Revolution, driven by the participation of students and the people, both bodies aim to uphold democratic principles and restore public trust in the electoral process.

The ERC and EC recognize the urgency of bridging the trust gap with the electorate, acknowledging that past elections have left many disenfranchised and disillusioned.

Dr Badiul Alam Majumder's ERC will address structural loopholes, while AMM Nasir Uddin's newly formed EC will ensure that voters can exercise their rights freely.

While talking to Dhaka Tribune on Friday, ERC chief Badiul Alam Majumder said: "We are working tirelessly to ensure fair elections and restore voters' rights."

He proposed that the interim government take all necessary steps to move past the dark chapters of the nation's history.

He also called for the removal of party influence from the EC to ensure long-term benefits, reaffirming that the new commission will operate with integrity.

Majumder further said that not only the commission but also law enforcement agencies must provide full support to ensure the effective implementation of its work.

ERC chief Badiul Alam Majumder also said that the commission is currently examining the irregularities reported in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 general elections, intending to recommend appropriate punishments for those responsible.

ERC sources said they will reach out to 22 political parties and alliances, including BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, to gather feedback on proposed electoral reforms, in line with government recommendations.

Unregistered parties, and the Awami League, will be contacted, but some unregistered parties will also be consulted, the sources said.

Meanwhile, newly appointed CEC AMM Nasir Uddin is committed to delivering a free, fair, and credible election.

In an interview with a private television on Thursday, the CEC highlighted the sacrifices made for voting rights, noting that many citizens could not vote in the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections.

Acknowledging this responsibility, he vowed to learn from past election flaws and prevent their recurrence, emphasizing his commitment to protecting citizens' voting rights and ensuring electoral integrity.
