The Election Commission (EC) has directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to take action against Additional DIG of Tourist Police Md Moniruzzaman for participating in election activities, violating the government employment rules.

EC Additional Secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath said that a letter has been sent to inform the ministry about the action taken against the official.

"The police officer submitted the nomination form along with his brother, which is a clear violation of service rules. The ministry will initiate a departmental case in this regard," he said.

EC Deputy Secretary Md Mizanur Rahman has sent a letter to the senior secretary of the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The letter mentioned that Additional DIG Moniruzzaman was in uniform while collecting the nomination of a potential candidate from the office of a political party for the Jhenaidah-1 election, an incident reported by various newspapers and media outlets.

"The actions of Additional DIG Moniruzzaman violate the Government Servants (Conduct) Rules, 1979. The Election Commission has ordered that action be taken against him," the letter said.

According to media reports, Moniruzzaman accompanied his younger brother, Shailkupa municipal Awami League General Secretary Wahiduzzaman, to the Awami League office on April 29 to submit party nomination papers for the Jhenaidah-1 constituency.

The seat was vacated following the death of Jhenaidah district Awami League President Abdul Hye on March 16. A by-election for the constituency is scheduled for June 5.
