Chowdhury Fahria Afrin has unofficially won the mayor's position in Munshiganj Municipality with a significant margin in the by-election.
She received 21,994 votes with the Jug symbol. Her competitor, SM Mahtab Uddin Kallol, with the Coconut Tree symbol, received only 610 votes.
She is unofficially elected as the first female mayor of Munshiganj municipality by a margin of 21,384 votes.
Munshiganj District Election Officer and Returning Officer Bashir Ahmed announced the result around 6:30pm on Saturday.
Chowdhury Fahria Afrin is the wife of Munshiganj-3 constituency MP Mohammed Faisal Biplob and daughter-in-law of Munshiganj District Awami League President Mohammad Mohiuddin.
The Munshiganj municipality mayoral post fell vacant after former mayor Mohammed Faisal Biplob resigned to contest the 12th parliamentary election.
