A Chittagong court granted bail to Member of Parliament Mohiuddin Bachchu in a case filed by the Election Commission (EC).

Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Md Salauddin issued the order on Sunday afternoon, said Chittagong district Public Prosecutor (PP) Sheikh Iftekhar Saimul Chowdhury.

He said that an arrest warrant was issued against MP Mohiuddin Bachchu in the EC's case, prompting him to surrender in court on Thursday and apply for bail. Following the hearing, the court approved his bail application.

On February 15, MP Mohiuddin Bachchu was summoned to appear in court, but failing to do so led to the issuance of an arrest warrant. The next proceedings for the case have been scheduled for May 12.

On December 24, independent candidate M Manjur Alam accused Mohiuddin Bachchu of distributing government grant cheques to imams and muezzins of mosques. The complaint included details of cheques distributed to mosques and a claim of intentional fabrication by Bachchu.

The election inquiry committee investigated the complaint, interrogating mosque officials and collecting evidence. Based on their findings, the committee recommended legal action against Mohiuddin Bachchu, prompting the EC's decision to file a complaint in the judicial magistrate's court.

In response, Bachchu defended his actions in a press conference, saying that he lawfully distributed government grants within the prescribed time frame.

He said the distribution process adhered to legal procedures and involved recipients personally signing and accepting cheques through the deputy commissioner's office.
