Awami League candidate and incumbent member of parliament Md Shahiduzzaman Sarker has secured the Naogaon-2 constituency in the 12th national parliament election.
He secured the victory by a huge margin by securing over 118,940 votes with the Boat symbol. His closest rival, an independent candidate with Truck symbol, Engineer Akhtarul Alam, secured 74,363 votes.
Besides, Jatiya Party nominee Advocate Tofazzal Hossain got 4,094 votes with the Plough symbol and independent candidate Md Mehedi Mahmud Reza got 1,479 votes with the Eagle symbol.
Naogaon Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Golam Moula said that the election took place in a free and fair atmosphere.
“Voters cast their votes in a festive mood. No unwanted event has been reported anywhere in the election,” he added.
Naogaon Superintendent of Police Muhammad Rashidul Hoq said: “With only one constituency being elected, it was much easier to maintain security. Four policemen were stationed at each polling centre. Mobile teams were deployed at each centre. An executive magistrate served in each union. A total of 8 platoons of BGB members were deployed in these two upazilas. Apart from this, the required number of Ansar members were also deployed. In a word, the election was held peacefully.”
On December 29, the Election Commission postponed the election for Naogaon-2 due to the death of Aminul Haque.
The election concluded without any untoward incidents on Monday.
