The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-7) detained a man who was seen holding a pistol and firing it outside the Pahartali polling centre in Chittagong-10, during national polls on Sunday.
The arrestee has been identified as Shamim Azad, a follower of Md Wasim, Councilor of Pahartali Ward No 13, Chittagong City Corporation. He is also allegedly involved with Chhatra League politics.
Azad was detained from the Sitakunda upazila, along with foreign firearms, said Nurul Abshar, senior assistant director (media) of RAB-7.
He said that Azad was detained in connection with the open firing incident between two parties.
Detailed information regarding the arrest and the incident will be provided later, he added.
On Sunday, at least two people were shot in a clash between activists of Awami League nominated candidate Mohiuddin Bachchu and independent candidate Mohammad Manjur Alam in Chittagong.
There were also reports of crude bomb blasts during the clash, Chittagong Divisional Commissioner Md Tofail Islam confirmed the matter.
