A total of 77 current members of the Awami League in parliament have been denied party nominations this time. Of them, 60 are not participating in the polls, while 17 existing parliamentarians are contesting as independent candidates after being excluded from the party's nomination.
Independent candidates in the voting arena without party endorsement include Dr Murad Hasan (Jamalpur-4), Salim Uddin Tarafder (Naogaon-3), Emaz Uddin Pramanik (Naogaon-4), Pankaj Nath (Barisal-4), Monowar Hossain Chowdhury (Gaibandha-4), Enamul Haque (Rajshahi-4), Ranajit Kumar Roy (Jessore-4), Mir Mostaque Ahmed Robi (Satkhira-2), Md Sanowar Hossain (Tangail-5), Anwarul Abedin Khan (Mymensingh-9), Iqbal Hossain Sabuj (Gazipur-3), Mouazzam Hossain Ratan (Sunamganj-1), Abdul Majid Khan (Habiganj-2), and Jafar Alam (Cox's Bazar-1).
Reason behind drop
Dr Murad Hasan (Jamalpur-4) received criticism due to various controversial activities last year, leading to his expulsion from the Awami League and removal from the post of state minister. Consequently, he did not receive the Awami League nomination in the 12th national election and is now contesting as an independent candidate.
Salim Uddin Tarafder was replaced in Naogaon-3 to accommodate the former secretary Sourendra Nath Chakraborty, while Emaz Uddin Pramanik was excluded from Naogaon-4 due to age considerations. Both have opted to run as independent candidates.
In Barisal-4, Pankaj Nath lost his candidacy due to a conflict with a local influential political leader but is now contesting independently for the Barisal-4 seat.
Additionally, two members of parliament from Awami League's reserved women's seats are also running independently. Tahmina Begum is an independent candidate in Madaripur-3, and Anjum Sultana is running for parliament seat in Comilla-6.
